Entries for the Interior Design Competition 2010 closed on 15 July. No fewer than 223 participants from 27 countries, including Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, South Korea and Switzerland are taking part in this year's prototype competition. All objects entered will be shown at the Interior Design Biennial 2010 in the Underground. The Interior Design Competition 2010 is consequently the ideal platform to be discovered and to bring new, trail-blazing designs to a wide public.

The international panel of judges will convene on Monday, 30 August to decide on the winning entries and distribute the prizes. They will be looking not only for new and creative ideas, but also for functionality, technology and reproducibility. The panel will be composed of designers and captains of industry such as Giulio Cappellini (IT), Nipa Doshi (IND), Marcus Fairs (UK), Pierre Keller (CH) and Lowie Vermeersch (BE).

The hosts and hostesses of each edition of the international Interior Design Biennial are clothed by a Belgian designer. Uniforms have on previous occasions been designed by Walter Van Beirendonck, Kaat Tilley and Xavier Delcour. Black Balloon has been chosen for the Interior 2010 uniform. Cléo Baele and Sarah Bos are the creative brains behind this young Ghent-based label.

They draw inspiration primarily from their living environment: music, design, culture, photography, nature, architecture, literature, etc. Their graduation collection earned them the prestigious "Fred and Ginger" prize for the most promising collection. They have already created a collection of footwear and

The forum provides space for an extensive programme of lectures, workshops, discussions and presentations. Such names as Dan Formosa (USA) - co-founder of Smart Design, Agnete Enga (SE) - the driving force behind Femme Den, and designer Tom Dixon have already been announced.

The forum also welcomed designer Nipa Doshi (IND/UK), the female half of the Doshi Lieven designer duo. With their multicultural designs, they are drawing the attention of international manufacturers such as Moroso and Habitat. Professor Andrea Branzi (IT) will give a lecture entitled 'Things, touches & territories', and present his brand new book 'Made in Belgium'. Designer Piero Lissoni (IT) will speak about working together with the Italian furniture manufacturer Living Divani. And, in cooperation with Designregio Kortrijk, International Interior Design 2010 will welcome designer James Irvine (UK).

The Dutch artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn are providing colourful fireworks with their Favela Painting project. In 2006, the two painters descended on shantytowns in Rio de Janeiro to brighten up certain neighbourhoods by painting the houses. They now plan to paint an entire hill to upgrade the district completely and to draw attention to the problems it faces. This lecture is a co-production with Sikkens.
