Our Japanese Guest of Honour Junya Ishigami introduced his new, light and white world at INTERIEUR 2010, where dream and reality met. His PICNIC project was especially different, beautiful and fascinating. With Junya Ishigami, INTERIEUR 2010 dipped its toes in a new world of architecture and design, a world where there is room for poetry, precision, technology and art.
The young architect Junya Ishigami was the best pupil of architect Kazuyo Sejima (Sanaa). During the past few years, Ishigami begun a search for the limits of lightness and whiteness, where form and technology, architecture and engineering meet and reinforce each other. His architectural creativity borders on the wonderful and his engineering inventiveness means that each new project is bound to be unusual and surprising.
Junya Ishigami (°1974) was born in Kanagawa (JP) and studied architecture at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Before establishing his own company junya.ishigami+associates in 2004, he joined Kazuyo Sejima & Associates. He is known for the Kanagawa Institute of Technology KAIT workshop (2008) and the Yohji Yamamoto shop at Gansevoort Street, New York (2008). In 2010 he won the Golden Lion at the Biennale di Venezia. For the Italian furniture company Living Divani he designed the Drop Table, the Family Chair and the Garden Plate.
