INTERIEUR FOUNDATION OPTS FOR A NEW DEPARTURE

2011-05-26

 - 2011-05-26 - INTERIEUR FOUNDATION OPTS FOR A NEW DEPARTURE

<< 1/1 >>

The Interieur Foundation is very proud to announce the appointment of the Belgian designer, Lowie Vermeersch, as its new president. He succeeds José Carlier in this position. In addition to taking on the presidency of the Foundation, Vermeersch will also be acting as curator for the Biennale INTERIEUR 2012.

After a number of months of intensive preparations for the 23rd Interieur Biennale, which will be held next year from 19th to 28th October, Lowie Vermeersch was elected unanimously by the Board of Directors to become the new president of the Interieur Foundation.

Earlier this year, Lowie Vermeersch started up his own design studio called Granstudio and he will also take up the mantle of president and curator of the Interieur Biennale this year. He will be assisted in these tasks by operating director, Colette Deceuninck, and artistic director, Dieter Van Den Storm. The Interieur Foundation decided that it was time for a complete revamp and so went looking for ways to blow a breath of fresh air through the team. The change of key players in the team will ensure that the Biennale receives a new boost and its future is assured more than ever.

"In a period when design is becoming more important and gaining greater recognition, our aim is to strengthen the role of Interieur further by continuing to take a different approach. This is what has always made the Interieur Biennale stand out from the rest," says an enthusiastic Vermeersch. "The future promises to be more focused, with a clear-cut Interieur identity designed to attract even more attention internationally. How will we be doing that? Without giving too much away about out creative thought patterns, I can say now that sensory perceptions will be central to our thinking."

The coming months will see a great deal of work going on behind the scenes on the forthcoming edition of Belgium's most important Interieur event.

The Belgian Designer of the Year has been announced: Nathalie Dewez. She is known for her creative lighting objects with which she aims to attract a whole range of different international manufacturers.

Light as a magical tool. Since the beginning of her career, the Brussels designer Nathalie Dewez has made it her trademark. Her lamps are sculptures that continue to reach into the soul even when they are not switched on. They are more than just functional objects; they are sculptures with genuine added value. She has achieved her arrival at an international level with work for clients such as Habitat in Great Britain and Ligne Roset in France. And this year she added Established & Sons to her client list. Her projects include completing a gigantic light sculpture for MUDAM, the Contemporary Art Museum in Luxembourg. And she also handled the lighting for Senteurs d'Ailleurs, the Brussels perfume emporium that opens the doors to its new premises at the end of June.

The 'Designer of the Year' award is an initiative by the Interieur Foundation and the magazines Weekend Knack and Le Vif Weekend. The award is also supported by the Design Museum Gent and Grand-Hornu Images. Nathalie Dewez is the sixth Designer of the Year. Since 2006 the award has been won by Alain Berteau, Nedda El-Asmar, Stefan Schöning, Sylvain Willenz and Bram Boo.
